The Fox and the Grapes

Read-aloud isn't available in this browser.

One hot afternoon a fox came upon a vine looping high over a branch, heavy with ripe grapes. They hung exactly where the sun caught them, and his mouth watered at the sight. He backed up and jumped. He missed. He backed up further and jumped again, and again, until his legs ached and the dust rose around him. At last he sat down, looked up at the grapes one final time, and walked away. "They were sour anyway," he said to no one in particular. It is easy to scorn what you cannot have.
