Pip was late for the library, so he took the shortcut through the field. The grass was taller than he expected and hid a muddy ditch. By the time he climbed out, his boots were heavy with mud and twenty minutes had passed. Gran had walked the long way on the path and was already sitting on the library steps with two books in her lap. "The fast way," Pip said, scraping his boots, "was the slow way."
